More Kensington Winter Solstice

#Toronto celebrated the change of seasons with the December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice in the famous neighbourhood of Kensington Market. The festival is based on the Nothern Hemisphere's Southern Solstice where the sun is at its lowest altitude and at its southernmost point in the sky and which usually occurs on December 21 or 22 of each year.
A ritual gathering began in the heart of the market before setting off on a parade through the streets before coming to Alexandra Park - scene of the traditional burning. Much like Burning Man the end of the event is the lighting of a large art installation. Besides the elaborate and large figures and costumes the highlight of the night is always the fire performers who put on a fabulous show.
